Lineman climbing spikes are used by workers who must climb electrical or telephone poles to do work. Also known as gaffs, hooks or climbers, these tools connect to the lineman`s shoe with straps. A sharp hook protrudes from the side, giving the lineman traction and a grip on the pole.
Climbing spikes are used in conjunction with a belt and straps to secure the lineman to the pole and allow him the hand freedom to work. As a lineman will spend large amounts of time at the top of telephone poles, these tools are designed for comfort as well as safety. Weight is also a consideration, with lighter equipment being considered superior.
When choosing climbing spikes, most linemen prefer a longer gaff (sharp hook) for better traction. The spikes should strap securely to the boot. Some linemen prefer steel gaffs to aluminum ones, feeling that the thicker shanks provide better traction.
There are definite preferences among lineman concerning brand. Brands include Bashlin, Klein and Buckingham. Usually a lineman will find a favored brand and stay with it during the course of his career. Changing brands can lead to an adjustment period in which the lineman learns to use the different type.
